At Ocean Homes, we believe your home should be your oasis. Especially as we are all spending a lot more time at home, as we do our part to bend the curve of covid-19. Over the past year, our custom build clients have asked us to include home gyms to help them stay fit and healthy throughout the pandemic.

As a custom builder, we love designing livable spaces that fit our clients’ lifestyles. Like people, homes are unique, and we believe that they should be made to fit the family or person who will reside within a home’s four walls. Over the past year, the pandemic has changed how we live and utilize our homes. A year ago, a home gym was a luxury, not a must-have.

Luckily, a home gym is something you can easily design and create in your home, with minimal equipment! Here are our tips for setting up a home gym that you want to workout or meditate in.

Our Ocean Homes Tips For Creating A Home Gym You Want to Use:

Choose a Designated Space for your Home Gym – most of our clients opt to place their home gyms in their basements. By choosing a designated space, you’ll be able to keep bulky and unattractive workout equipment out of living spaces.

Let the Light Shine In – When we design home gyms, we like to make sure there is a natural light source (via a window) and an attractive light fixture with a warm light. We find our clients are more likely to make the most of their home gyms when the light is attractive, and they feel good moving in the space

Hang-Up a Mirror: Mirrors are a home gym must-have. They’re also the simplest way to transform a storage room into a home gym. Once you hang up a mirror, it’s magical how space transforms into a home fitness studio.

Choose a Flooring that’s Easy to Clean – When we design home gyms, we design with our client's budget in mind. If the budget is tighter, we’ll recommend rubber matting or vinyl flooring. If budget allows, we’ll recommend cork or hardwood flooring. Whatever flooring you choose, we recommend an excellent underlayer that will provide some absorbency if you are into home aerobics.

Invest in Equipment You’ll Use – When it comes to workout equipment, it’s easy to be inundated by choice. At ocean homes, we recommend to our clients that they invest in equipment they’ll use regularly. If you’re into group fitness, a Peloton is a great choice.

Organize Your Equipment with Wall Storage Units – Built-in wall storage units are great for hanging up mats, storing hand weights, and for keeping your equipment organized.

Invest in a Blue Tooth Speaker – The beauty of a home gym is that it’s 100% yours! Listen to whatever music you want at whatever volume motivates you. Our clients are big fans of installing bluetooth speakers in their home gyms so that they can control their playlist easily from their phone or watch.

Keep the Air Fresh: If you don’t have central air conditioning in your home, keep your home gym fresh by making sure there’s a window or outside door you can open. If not, a simple fan is great for circulating the air in your home gym and will help keep you cool during those burpees.

Schedule Your Workouts – Even though you’re at home more than you’ve ever been before, we recommend scheduling your “private” time in your home gym – especially if you’re sharing your home gym with other family members.

Make the Space Yours – Decorate your home gym by adding a little paint or wallpaper to the space. The more inviting you make your home gym, the more likely you will use it.

Now that you have our tips for designing your home gym, we hope you and your family enjoy your active space.

And when you’re ready for a custom-built home, let us know – we’d love to design your family's dream house.
